Abstract

This study aims to describe the criteria of the ideal teacher according to Burhānuddīn al-Zarnūjī in his work Ta‘lim al-Muta‘allim Ṭarīq at-Ta‘allum and to analyze its relevance to contemporary teacher competencies within the modern educational framework. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research, with Ta‘lim al-Muta‘allim as the primary source and various works on Islamic education and national teacher competency policies as secondary sources. Data were analyzed through descriptive-analytical and thematic hermeneutic methods to interpret the teacher criteria proposed by al-Zarnūjī: al-a‘lam (most knowledgeable), al-asann (most experienced), and al-aura‘ (most pious). The findings reveal that al-Zarnūjī perceives the ideal teacher as one who integrates intellectual mastery, wisdom, and moral integrity. These three criteria strongly correspond with the four core competencies of modern teachers—pedagogical, professional, social, and personal—and serve as an ethical and spiritual foundation for teacher professionalism. In conclusion, al-Zarnūjī’s thought provides significant contributions to revitalizing teacher professional ethics and shaping morally grounded educators in the era of educational globalization.
